A complete guide to mastering affiliate programs
Affiliate Programs? What are they?
When you buy something online, there is a good chance that you are buying
something from someone like me, who is making a living online, working from
home. More and more companies are using affiliates to increase their sales.
The way it works is simple. I advertise something for sale on a website of
mine. It may be a book, a bike, or pretty much anything you can think of.
You click through and buy the product. The company you buy it from pay me
a commission for sending you to them. It is a win-win situation for companies
of all sizes. They only pay me if someone buys something, and then it is a
predefined percentage of the sale which they have worked into the price of
the item anyway. I get paid for sending a buying customer to them.
There are many, many people making online this way, right from the comfort of their own homes.
Working online was a necessity for me
In August 2001 I found out that I was going to lose my job (my wife had lost
hers a couple of months earlier). Like many, we had a mortgage to pay, but
now we had no income to pay it (except our savings).
My wife and I decided to put our house up for sale - we had no choice. We
both started scouring the internet for income opportunities and yes, we were
scammed by a few. However, in the last week of August I found a site that
changed my life. It was the now famous Sitesell.com which sells software called
SiteBuild It! We bought a license and built our first affiliate site. That
site went on to make us quite a bit of money, but the restraints of Site Build
It were a little too much for our creative side and we decided to buy some
hosting of our own and start building sites in earnest.
By August 2002 (one year later), we were making enough money to live. It took a year of hard work, trial and error, and determination, but we made it. If it had not been our NEED TO SUCCEED, we would probably have given up, and I guess many others are in a similar situation. We learnt a lot in the last couple of years, and now want to give some of it back to those who are in a similar situation.
